Ancestral Tablet – Xuanyue Spirit Tablet in Black Walnut

Description

Ancestral tablet — are you looking for a simple, meaningful way to remember someone at home?

Not something overly ornate.
Not something hard to understand.
Just… something that feels right.

That’s exactly why we designed this piece.

Ancestral Tablet – Xuanyue (玄岳) | IN MEMORY Series

The Xuanyue ancestral tablet is part of our IN MEMORY collection.

It is also known as a spirit tablet, traditionally used across East Asia to represent and honor loved ones who have passed.

But we redesigned it for modern homes.

• Clean form
• Solid presence
• No unnecessary decoration

Because remembrance doesn’t need complexity.

Design Inspiration – From Song Dynasty Landscape Art

This design was inspired by traditional Chinese landscape paintings from the Song Dynasty.

However, instead of copying details, we simplified everything into two elements:

• One curved arc (representing the mountain)
• One grounded base (representing stability)

The result is a shape that feels calm and steady.

Not loud.
Not symbolic in a complicated way.
Just quietly present.

In traditional culture, mountains represent:

• Stability
• Continuity
• A place where spirit resides

This ancestral tablet carries that idea into a modern object.

Material – North American Black Walnut (FAS Grade)

The tablet is made from FAS-grade North American black walnut.

This is one of the highest grades of hardwood available.

• Rich, deep color
• Natural grain variation
• Long-lasting durability

Each piece is:

• Hand-finished
• Carefully selected
• Slightly unique in tone and texture

No two are exactly the same.

Why This Ancestral Tablet Feels Different

Most traditional spirit tablets are very detailed.

But we asked a different question:

What if remembrance could be simple?

So we reduced the design to its essence.

• No excessive carving
• No visual noise
• No cultural barrier for understanding

Instead, you get something that fits naturally into a home.

A quiet presence.

A place to pause.

A Small Story (From One Customer)

A customer once told us:

“I didn’t grow up with ancestral tablets.
But I wanted a place for my father.
Not a shrine… just somewhere I could sit and remember.”

He placed this on a shelf near a window.

A candle.
A photo.
Sometimes flowers.

That was enough.

刻竹为铭，化帘为境
Carving memory into form, turning space into a quiet realm.

半篾江南，满室心安
A hint of Jiangnan, a room filled with calm.

心归竹处，思宁帘间
The heart returns to stillness, thoughts settle in quiet space.

FAQs About Ancestral Tablet

What is an ancestral tablet?

An ancestral tablet is a memorial object used to represent a deceased loved one, commonly placed in homes or family altars.

Is this the same as a spirit tablet?

Yes. “Spirit tablet” is another commonly used English term, especially in Western contexts.

Do I need to follow religious rules to use it?

No. Many people use it in a personal, non-religious way.

Where should I place it?

A quiet, clean space is enough — a shelf, table, or small altar.

Is each piece handmade?

Yes. Each tablet is handcrafted and finished individually.

Ancestral tablet design should feel natural — not forced, not complicated.

This is what we aimed for with Xuanyue.
