Ancestral Tablet – IN MEMORY Guining Spirit Tablet Design

Ancestral tablet design often feels either too heavy or too distant.

So, we approached it differently.

I wanted something that still carries meaning, but feels calm and natural in everyday space.

This is where the Guining piece began.

Ancestral Tablet Inspired by Bamboo Screens

This ancestral tablet draws inspiration from traditional Jiangnan bamboo screens.

Instead of a solid block, we created a structure that allows light to pass through.

Because of this, the piece feels lighter and more open.

• Parallel bamboo lines create rhythm
• Open structure allows soft light
• The form feels quiet and balanced

In this way, the tablet becomes more than a marker.

It becomes a space where memory rests in peace.

What “Guining (归宁)” Means

The name comes from a traditional idea — returning home in peace.

It suggests a place where things settle and become calm again.

So, the design follows that same direction.

Simple. Quiet. Grounded.

Material – Walnut Wood and Bamboo

Material plays a central role in this spirit tablet.

• Black walnut – stable, deep tone, long-lasting
• Bamboo – light, natural, flexible

This combination creates contrast.

Wood provides structure, while bamboo softens the overall presence.

Because of this, the piece feels balanced rather than heavy.

Why We Chose These Materials

• Walnut holds form over time
• Bamboo introduces lightness and rhythm
• Both materials age naturally

As a result, the tablet integrates easily into a home environment.

Handcrafted by Architectural Designers

Our team comes from an architectural background.

So, we design objects the same way we design buildings.

• We start with structure
• Then refine proportions
• Finally remove unnecessary elements

This piece went through multiple iterations.

Each detail was adjusted until the balance felt right.

Design Details That Matter

Light and Shadow

The bamboo lines allow light to pass through.

So, the appearance changes throughout the day.

Calm and Ordered Structure

The lines are evenly spaced.

Because of this, the visual rhythm feels stable.

Gentle Presence

Unlike traditional spirit tablets, this piece avoids heaviness.

Instead, it sits quietly in the space.

Chinese Lines and Their Meaning

We kept several original lines, and here is how we interpret them:

此心安处，即竹即乡
Where the heart feels at ease, that place becomes home — even within bamboo.

刻竹为铭，化帘为境
Carving memory into bamboo, turning a screen into a space of remembrance.

半篾江南，满室心安
A hint of Jiangnan, bringing a quiet sense of calm into the room.

心归竹处，思宁帘间
The mind returns to stillness, resting gently within the bamboo lines.

Who This Ancestral Tablet Is For

This piece works well if you are looking for something more subtle.

• It fits naturally into modern interiors
• It avoids heavy, traditional forms
• It creates a calm and quiet presence
• It feels closer to daily life

In many cases, people choose this kind of spirit tablet because it feels less distant.

A Short Story

During early design, we tried a fully solid version.

It felt too heavy.

So, we removed material step by step.

Eventually, the bamboo structure remained.

That version felt lighter — and more natural.

So we kept it.
