Description
Are you struggling to find a Memorial Tablet that honors your loved one without feeling heavy or out of place in your home?
Many traditional chinese ancestral tablets carry a lot of visual weight. Consequently, they can sometimes feel disconnected from modern daily life. We wanted to change that narrative. As a team of architectural designers at URNURN, we pursue the ultimate aesthetic balance. We meticulously handcrafted the IN MEMORY series after multiple rounds of design and prototyping. You can learn more about our design philosophy from our team of architects.
Drawing Inspiration from Ancient East Asian Architecture
We draw our core inspiration from ancient East Asian architecture. However, we refuse to simply copy the past. Instead, we extract the structural elegance and simplify it.
During the design phase of the JINGAN tablet, we actually scaled down the dimensions several times. One afternoon in the studio, a colleague pointed out, “This shouldn’t just sit on a formal altar; it needs to feel natural on a modern living room bookshelf.” That observation clicked for us. Therefore, we finalized the compact size of 45x40x150mm. It is small, yet its architectural base grounds it firmly to the earth.
The Cultural Meaning Behind JINGAN
To help you understand the profound thought behind this piece, here is how we translate its ancient cultural concepts into modern comfort:
- 依神、主道、木不成斫
Ancient roots, simple wood.
We trace the design back to the Pre-Qin “Book of Rites”. It honors the spirit by keeping the wood unadorned and pure, avoiding overly complex carvings. - 静:哀思有度、心神凝定
Jing: Measured grief, a settled mind.
Grief should not constantly overwhelm your daily life. The straight, simple lines encourage a calm and steady remembrance. - 安:逝者得所、生者心安
An: A resting place for the departed, peace for the living.
We designed a sanctuary that provides a rightful, dignified place for memory, letting them rest in peace while giving you peace of mind.

Premium Materials and Craftsmanship
Because this serves as a container for the meaning of life, the materials matter immensely. We specifically chose a two-wood combination:
- North American FAS Black Walnut: We use this for the main body. It is profound, grounded, and carries a sense of deep respect.
- Maple Wood: We integrate maple for its clear, gentle, and warm tones, which beautifully represent your ongoing affection.
- Architectural Details: If you look closely at the top, you will notice a very subtle curve. This mimics the shape of a cloud, symbolizing a connection to the sky.

Real-User FAQs
Is this suitable for a Western home?
Absolutely. While it functions perfectly as a traditional Chinese ancestral tablet, its minimalist, warm wood design blends seamlessly into modern Western interiors. It looks beautiful next to a favorite plant or framed photo.
Can I engrave a name on it?
Yes. The flat, unadorned front surface of the walnut body is specifically designed to accommodate the engraving of names or short, meaningful dates.

How do I care for the solid wood?
Maintain it simply by wiping it gently with a soft, dry cloth. Furthermore, keep it away from direct heating vents or harsh, prolonged sunlight to protect the natural wood grain.
Do you have other sizes or styles?
Yes, JINGAN is part of our larger IN MEMORY series. If you prefer a different functional design, you might explore other options in our collection.
